Look for BPI (Building Performance Institute) certification, which ensures technicians understand building science. RESNET certification is valuable for energy auditing. State contractor licensing is required in most states. EPA Lead-Safe certification is necessary for homes built before 1978. OSHA safety training is also important.

While not always required, an energy audit ($200–$600) is highly recommended. A blower door test identifies air leakage points, and infrared cameras reveal missing or inadequate insulation.
